An unidentified person fell ill at the Manston facility, weeks after reports of overcrowding and disease emerged (Picture: Reuters)
A person being held at the Manston immigration centre has died after falling ill.
The unidentified individual was taken to hospital after ‘becoming unwell’ and could not be revived by doctors.
It comes amid intense scrutiny on conditions in facilities holding migrants in the UK.
A recent report found the Kent centre, which is used as a first point of contact for people reaching the country, was dangerously overcrowded.
Some were being held at Manston for several weeks despite it being designed for 24-hour turnarounds.
Reports of infectious diseases spreading at the centre and children sleeping on the floor led to an admission from government ministers that it must be improved.
Few details have been released about the death but it has been confirmed by the Home Office.

A statement posted on Twitter read: ‘We express our heartfelt condolences to all those affected.”
‘A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.
‘We take the safety of those in our care extremely seriously and are profoundly saddened by this event.
‘A post-mortem examination will take place so it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.’
