Rishi Sunak has told Volodymyr Zelensky ‘we are with you all the way’ amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
A video of the pair meeting has been shared by No 10’s official Twitter account.
Following in the footsteps of both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, Mr Sunak has pledged that UK support for Ukraine in the fight against Russia will remain steadfast.
Today marks Mr Sunak’s first visit to Ukraine as Prime Minister.
In a tweet, he said: ‘Britain knows what it means to fight for freedom. We are with you all the way’.
In Kyiv, Mr Sunak laid flowers at a memorial for the war dead and lit a candle at a memorial for victims of the Holodomor famine, before meeting emergency personnel at a fire station.
He said it was ‘deeply humbling’ to be in Kyiv.
He added: ‘I am proud of how the UK stood with Ukraine from the very beginning. And I am here today to say the UK and our allies will continue to stand with Ukraine, as it fights to end this barbarous war and deliver a just peace.’

Mr Sunak’s predecessor Liz Truss didn’t make it to Ukraine in her brief tenure as Prime Minister – she did previously in the role of Foreign Secretary however – although in September she had accepted an invite to visit.
Boris Johnson enjoyed several visits to Ukraine during his time wielding the keys to No 10.
He had seemed to forge a strong friendship with President Zelensky, who previously said he was ‘happy’ when the Tory survived a no confidence vote.
When Mr Johnson resigned, the Ukrainian leader said his country felt ‘personal gratitude to Boris’.
