Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – now it doesn’t matter what sort of phone plan you have (pic: Activision)
The SMS Protect system for Overwatch 2 and Call Of Duty has been rolled back so more people can actually play them.
Among the many issues fans had with Overwatch 2 at launch, one of them was an SMS Protect system that required players to provide a registered post-paid phone number to play the game.
This was part of Activision Blizzard’s efforts to curb potential cheating and was also implemented for the Call Of Duty games. However, many criticised the decision because it effectively locked out people who had pre-paid phone plans.
It effectively meant people who were trying to save money or who couldn’t afford a rolling phone plan were being prevented from playing the games. Fortunately, Activision Blizzard has taken note and is abandoning the idea.
Recently, the company announced that it was updating the SMS Protect system for Overwatch 2. That should have gone through now so, if you have a pre-paid phone plan, you can now register it when setting up an account to play Overwatch 2.
This comes as part of a substantial patch, which has reintroduced Mei to the game’s playable roster. As a reminder, she was temporarily removed due to a bug that made one of her abilities overpowered.
The same also applies to Battle.net, which is used to play the Call Of Duty games. Perfect timing considering Call Of Duty: Warzone 2.0 launched earlier this week, so more people can now play it.

Its launch coincided with the release of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s first season of post-launch content, which introduces a new battle pass system and several quality of life changes.
Both announcements were made via their respective Twitter accounts, adding that their teams remain committed to protecting fans’ player experience and fighting against cheaters.
Overwatch 2 is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
