The Technical challenge in the Great British Bake Off 2022 final left viewers feeling frustrated beyond belief, with some claiming the bakers were ‘set up for failure’ with the incredibly hard challenge.
During tonight’s episode, Syabira, Sandro and Abdul went head to head in the hope of being crowned the winner of the competition.
After a Signature challenge inspired by a traditional summer picnic, judge Paul Hollywood set what seemed like a near-impossible task for the Technical – a summer pudding bombe.
As usual, the instructions were scarce, leaving it up to the finalists to use their initiative to interpret the recipe presented to them.
However, there was one crucial detail that they all fell short of – the fact that when using vegetarian gelatine, it needs to be boiled.
Several fans furiously pointed out that if the bakers had never used vegetarian gelatine before, then they simply wouldn’t have known to boil it, so it wasn’t their fault that they messed up on that part of the bake.

On top of that important element of the bombe, given this was a Bake Off challenge, the competitors also had a limited amount of time in which to complete their bakes.
This meant that unlike in the real world, they didn’t have an ample amount of time available to allow their culinary creations to cool.
‘For goodness sake you cannot make a summer pudding in 2 hours! Ridiculous challenge just done to humiliate the contestants,’ one person tweeted, while another remarked: ‘This technical was a complete stitch up.’
‘#GBBO ridiculous technical challenge. At least give them something that they would know and understand. If you are not a vegetarian (and over 90% of people are not) how would you know to boil the gelatin,’ someone else stated angrily.
One person said that in their opinion, they felt as though the contestants being ‘purposely set up to fail’ by not being given enough time for the challenge.
‘And unsurprisingly, they’re all struggling because – guess what – you can’t set a summer pudding in two hours without a blast chiller,’ someone else said, sounding just as irked as their fellow viewers.

At the end of the episode, Syabira was crowned the winner of the competition, having previously been crowned Star Baker on three occasions.
The bakers were joined by the eliminated contestants for the announcement as well as their friends and family, the first time the big gathering has been held since Covid-19 restrictions were put in place.
The Great British Bake Off is available to watch on All 4.
