The World Cup 2022 is here and it’s being held in Qatar.
This world cup is like no other – firstly it’s being held in December, and will be the shortest world cup to date. The teams heading to Qatar will be going with little training time – the Premier League played its last game on Sunday, and it will now return on Boxing Day.
With little prep time and a December tournament, few teams are feeling optimistic about the World Cup.
France go into the Qatar world cup as the reigning champions – they won for the second time in 2018.
But it’s Brazil who remains the most successful team, having won five titles and most believe they’re likely to win the 2022 tournament.
1930 – the first world cup was hosted and won by Uruguay, who defeated Argentina in the final.
1934 – Italy won their first of four titles.
1938 – Italy defends their world cup title, winning for a second time.
The World Cup was put on hold for 12 years due to WW2.
1950 – Uruguay beat Brazil in the final to win their second world cup.
1954 – West Germany wins.
1958 – A 17-year-old Pele scored six goals leading Brazil to their first world cup.
1962 – Brazil defends its world cup crown, winning the cup for a second time.
1966 – England bring football home for the first time winning at Wembley.
1970 – Pele lifts the cup again, as Brazil win for the third time.
1974 – West Germany wins their second world cup.
1978 – Argentina wins their first world cup after defeating the Netherlands in the final.
1982 – Italy win the world cup, again!
1986 – Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ means Argentina win the world cup.
1990 – West Germany beat Argentina in the final to win the world cup again.
1994 – Brazil wins the world cup for the fourth time.
1998 – France wins the tournament at home.
2002 – Brazil wins their fifth world cup, beating Germany in the final.
2006 – Italy wins the 2006 world cup amid their national league Serie A being rocked by match-fixing allegations.
2010 – Spain won their first-ever world cup in South Africa.
2014 – Germany wins the world cup.
2018 – France wins the world cup for the second time.
