Legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has revealed to Sir Elton John that she’s planning the release of a surprise live album.
The Both Sides Now singer, 79, made a special guest appearance on Sir Elton’s Apple Music podcast, Rocket Hour.
Mitchell hasn’t made regular appearances since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015, which left her temporarily unable to walk and talk.
The serious injuries she incurred also left her unable to play the guitar for a while, but she made a triumphant return to the stage in July this year.
That show, performed in Rhode Island, USA, was her first live concert for 20 years at the time, and a special recording will be released as a live album.
Sir Elton quizzed Mitchell about the release, asking: ‘People haven’t heard things from the Newport Folk Festival yet, but there’s going to be an album coming out?’

Mitchell then responded with a short answer, but it was long enough to confirm some of her fans’ wildest dreams: ‘Yeah, we’re trying to put that out.’
The release would be her first live LP of non-archival material since 1980, when she released Shadows and Light, which was made up of recordings of a show from California.
In July, Mitchell said that her return to live performances was one of the first times she’d ever felt nervous in front of an audience.

‘I’ve never been nervous about being in front of an audience, but I wanted to be good and I wasn’t sure that I could be. But I didn’t sound too bad tonight.’
It was only midway through 2022 that the singer opened up about suffering the aneurysm seven years ago, admitting that she had been forced to re-learn the guitar in that time.
She revealed to an American news show on CBS: ‘I’m learning. I’m looking at videos to see where I put my fingers. It’s amazing what an aneurysm knocks out.’
In October, Mitchell announced she would be performing her first live headline concert in two decades in the summer of 2023.
Mitchell rose to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s, achieving two top 10 albums and one top 20 single in the UK charts.

Her collection of works are regarded as some of the most influential and acclaimed in modern popular folk.
In the year 2000, a selection of Mitchell’s classic songs were re-recorded – one of those re-recordings, of 1969’s Both Sides, Now, was featured prominently in the 2003 romantic comedy Love, Actually.
