Elon Musk not above the law – US regulator
A US regular has said Twitter boss Elon Musk is “not above the law” and is watching events at the social media company unfold with “deep concern.”
The comments from The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) come after Twitter’s top privacy and compliance officers reportedly quit.
It has also been reported that Mr Musk told employees bankruptcy is not out of the question for Twitter.
The company has gone through massive changes since Musk took over – including firing thousands of employees last week.
He announced that users could buy verified status as part of a new subscription – which has raised concerns that Twitter that Twitter could be swamped with fake accounts.
On Thursday, Yoel Roth updated his profile on Twitter to indicate he was no longer in the role of Twitter’s head of trust and safety.
And US media reports say chief privacy officer Damien Kieran and chief compliance officer Marianne Fogarty resigned, and the company’s chief security officer Lea Kissner also quit.
The fear is the departures may increase the risk of Twitter violating regulatory orders. The firm was fined $150m in May for selling users’ data and had to agree to new privacy rules.
“We are tracking recent developments at Twitter with deep concern,” Douglas Farrar, the FTC’s director of public affairs, said.
“No chief executive or company is above the law, and companies must follow our consent decrees.”
