Paul Burrell claims the Netflix drama has portrayed Princess Diana as a ‘tragic figure’ (Picture: ITV)
Paul Burrell has branded the latest season of The Crown as ‘very upsetting’ due to Princess Diana’s portrayal.
The Crown series 5 covers the tumultuous 90s, including the divorces of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales – as well as Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips.
While the former Prince and Princess of Wales’ divorce wasn’t finalised until 1996, the announcement of a separation in 1992 triggered a chain of events that included the uncovering of recorded phone calls between Charles and Camilla, explicitly exposing their affair.
There were also several public interviews on both sides detailing their rocky relationship, including the now notorious Diana interview with Martin Bashir in which she declared there were ‘three people in her marriage’.
Former Royal aide Burrell voiced his opinion over the latest season which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday (November 9) on Thursday’s edition of Jeremy Kyle Live.
‘It’s upsetting,’ he began.

‘I’ve seen some of it. I’m finding it very upsetting.’
Addressing Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal as the late royal, he added: ‘At times it’s unnerving for me to hear her voice. She [Debicki] studied her voice very well.
‘You know what I don’t like. I don’t like to see the Princess constantly being portrayed as a wounded animal, constantly crying, constantly alone.
‘They’ve made her a very tragic figure, which of course she was, but not all of the time. She did have some fun.’

Imelda Staunton and Sir Jonathan Pryce step into the shoes of the late Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, while Dominic West is the new Prince Charles opposite Debicki, who inherits her role from Emma Corrin.
Addressing her nerves over tackling the role, The Great Gatsby star Debicki told Metro and other press how nervous she was ahead of shooting.

‘I think it would be fair to say we were all nervous,’ she said.
‘It felt like – and the show does feel like – an enormous responsibility, but we are supported by this network of people that understands that pressure and wants us to do it the best we can.
