Florida braces for Hurricane Nicole
A rare November hurricane is hurling towards Florida – with residents boarding up windows as they brace for the huge category one store.
Hurricane Nicole has lashed Grand Bahama Island and is forecast to hit Florida overnight.
Flights have already been grounded and theme parks, schools and other buildings have been shut ahead of its projected landfall.
Since record-keeping began in 1853, Florida has had only two hurricanes strike in November – in 1935 and 1985.
The storm is set to hit the south-eastern or east-central Florida coast early on Thursday.
Nicole – packing 75mph winds – was upgraded from a tropical storm to Hurricane on Wednesday evening.
The record-breaking storm looks set to arrive just weeks after Hurricane Ian left a path of destruction across Florida.
Several counties across the coast have issued evacuation orders, which reportedly include Donald Trump’s infamous Mar-a-Lago club in West Palm Beach.
Most of Florida’s 67 counties are under a state of emergency declaration.
