The Chas and Al affair storyline has received a strong response from fans (Pictures: ITV)
Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter has commented on the negative response that her character Chas Dingle is receiving amid her current storyline.
Chas, as viewers know, embarked on a sordid affair with troublemaker and schemer Al Chapman shortly after finding about her mum Faith’s terminal cancer diagnosis.
The landlady repeatedly sought comfort in Al’s arms, despite husband Paddy being by her side every step of the way, and to make matters worse, she selfishly resolved to move away with Al and take daughter Eve with her.
She didn’t quite get the opportunity to follow through on her plan, however, as Al was killed in a shock shooting, and she has been secretly grieving his demise ever since.
Chas’ affair and her subsequent treatment of all those around her hasn’t gone down too well with fans of the show, that’s for sure, with just about everyone calling for her to get her comeuppance for what she has done.
Lucy, who plays Chas, took to social media to discuss the contentious plotline, adding that it has got people talking which was, in fact, the aim.
‘Just a little thank you from me and my @emmerdale family,’ she wrote on Twitter. ‘Thank you for watching , enjoying and being so involved and invested in the stories we tell ….
‘And judging from many of your comments about Chas at the moment, I’d say it’s done what we strive to do get you talking ♥️‘.
This isn’t the first time Lucy has addressed the affair storyline. she previously told us that, like the rest of the nation, she ’hates’ what Chas has done.

‘You have to put yourself in character’s position I have to try and believe it, I don’t necessarily have to like it but as an actor you have to find the truth in it and trust what your character has been given,’ said the soap star.
‘And if the director or producer or if the writers are putting it your way you have to suck up your own feelings about things sometimes, and just say “well if that’s what my character’s doing I have to throw myself into it and believe it.’
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV.
