Smartphones, smart doorbells, smart TVs and now… smart menstrual cups.
Introducing Emm – a bio-wearable ‘menstrual health’ cup that not only tells you when it needs emptied but also records menstrual flow volume, flow rate, cycle length and regularity.
Think of it as a Fitbit… for your period.
The cup itself is made from medical-grade silicone and features a unique adaptive seal which shapes to everyone for complete reliability.
Holding as much blood as up to four tampons, it provides up to 12 hours of uninterrupted protection and comes with a special reusable applicator for easy, intuitive insertion, just like a tampon.
The case it comes with acts as a charger, a portable cleaner and UV steriliser, which means you don’t need to worry about finding a sink to wash it out every time you empty it.

The cup’s smart-sensor technology connects with the Emm app on your phone, automatically updating it with information on menstrual flow volume, flow rate, cycle length and regularity – unlike typical period tracking apps, where all data must be inputted manually.
The data Emm collects gives you the opportunity to understand what your menstrual health ‘baseline’ is so you can spot any changes in patterns or irregularities that could indicate a health issue.
The data is completely anonymised, meaning nobody is collecting your personal information.
The Emm cup comes from the UK-based, female founded biotech start-up Emm, whose founder Jenny Button set out on a mission to create the perfect period product.
Jenny says: ‘Emm gives those who menstruate the chance to understand more about their bodies like never before.
‘We carried out extensive research with period product users, who told us their current product were uncomfortable, unreliable, and unsustainable, yet collectively we’re spending billions a year on them.
‘Over the last two years we have built hundreds of prototypes, refining the design to make a new product that’s supremely comfortable, easy to use (and re-use!), and ultra-reliable.
‘While we can’t wait to bring our first product to market, this is just the beginning for us.
‘We know that the smart-sensor tech used in the cup will be able to benefit female health. It could also change the way female health research is conducted, improve female health outcomes, and help to close the gender health gap.’
Emm will be available in 2023, and the waitlist is live now on their website emm.co.
