The “short-sighted” decision seven years ago to build new homes to a lower standard of energy efficiency means millions of people are facing higher bills amid the energy crisis, according to the Liberal Democrats.
The Zero Carbon Homes standards were set to come into force in 2016. They aimed to make all new UK homes carbon neutral by requiring developers to build highly efficient structures, while properties would also have to generate clean energy, for example via rooftop solar panels.
