Today’s news summary – Paper Talk

There’s a variety of stories dominating Wednesday’s front pages but most look ahead to the Spring Statement from Chancellor Rishi Sunak. A few papers are leading with the ongoing Ukraine war and several papers feature an image of Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge on their royal Caribbean tour.

    ………………………………

The Sun leads with exclusive pictures from inside what it says is Vladimir Putin’s yacht. The paper calls the mega-yacht “obscene luxury and sickening excess”. The paper says the yacht – worth between £500m and £750m – has been moored in Italy and the government there is now under pressure to seize it.

The Daily Express leads with measures expected to be taken by the chancellor to ease the cost of living. The paper says the chancellor will pledge to ease economic pain and give struggling households “billions of pounds” to reduce the pain of the cost of living crisis.

The Daily Mirror leads with a mother who is working two jobs, who asks the chancellor for help with the increasing cost of living. “We need your help, Rishi” reads the paper’s headline. Racheal Vango begs Mr Sunak to help with fuel bills and not to put up National Insurance.

The worsening situation in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol is the lead on the front of The Guardian. A picture of a young girl crying as she says goodbye to her father through a train carriage window features on the front splash. The paper says Russia has laid waste to the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol and quotes officials describing it as “ashes of a dead land”.

Metro has the story of the exiled Ukrainians who tried to stop Roman Abramovich’s yacht from docking in a Turkish port – “Sling your hook” is the paper’s headline. The paper says the protesters were preventing the vessel from docking in the Turkish port where it was trying to avoid sanctions.

The Independent leads with a story claiming Putin’s soldiers have ‘kidnapped’ thousands of children. The paper claims more than 2,300 children have been illegally deported from Donetsk and Luhansk.
