US Embassy Kabul falls as the Afghan Taliban take back their capital Kabul. In a sweeping move where the Taliban have taken back 80% of their country in a month.
Overnight, the American flag at the US embassy in Kabul has been taken down – marking the final step in the evacuation of staff from the embassy.
Foreign nations are prioritising evacuations of their diplomats and citizens from the capital. But the US said it would also accelerate efforts to evacuate Afghans who had worked for them – like translators – as well as vulnerable locals who are eligible for special immigrant visas.
US Embassy Kabul falls in Afghanistan
According to a local news report, “almost all” of the embassy’s staff are already at the city’s Hamid Karzai international airport waiting for evacuation. This was confirmed by the US State Department that it has evacuated all of its embassy staff to a compound at the Hamid Karzai airport.
The US has sent an additional 1,000 troops to aid with the process, meaning that 6,000 military personnel are on the ground at the moment. The US state department is putting on a brave safe, still denying that they have not lost this war.
This is despite Bradley Rowan, a former advisor to the US Senate calls this “withdrawal a sabotage”. What the US did in 20 years was reversed in less than 40 days.
The scramble continues to evacuate and flee the country they have occupied for 20 years. They have shown little regard for all the local Afghans who stood by them and are likely to torture and killed because the US and the UK underestimated the power of the Taliban.
