Inspirational female leaders 2020 - Damilola Odufuwa and Odunayo Eweniyi, women’s rights advocates
In July 2020, Feminist Coalition was founded by Damilola Odufuwa and Odunayo Eweniyi, women’s rights advocates. A coalition that supports that Nigerian women are entitled to equal rights. WTX has chosen to nominate these two powerful women for its most inspirational female leaders of 2020 poll.
Odufuwa and Eweniyi came together to create a coalition of feminist women who fight for all people in Nigeria who experience inequality and deception in their everyday lives. They approached 12 other women who advocate for gender equality, too.
In October 2020, a series of mass peaceful protests took place in Nigeria. The reason behind them was police brutality and the two women created the hashtag and slogan “End SARS” to bring more awareness to the issue.

In Nigeria, the conversation around women’s rights has been largely ignored. Many on social media suggest that it is a bad time to address such issue and the extremists argue that it distracts people’s attention from other more important issues and perhaps it completely cancels the collective fight. Women are experiencing harmful handling from the system and negative attitudes from the men they fight with. The two influential women made 2020 the right time for these gendered violence issues to be addressed.
Feminist Coalition’s founding members decided their first project would be to support July’s 2020 peaceful protest through making sure that Nigerians are safe and able to execute their constitutional rights.
“We’re committed to helping the Nigerian youth amplify their voices, as we collectively demand an end to injustice,” The Founding Members of the Feminist Coalition.
Members have the freedom of choice when it comes to particular projects in line with their purpose and personal fights. Members, also continue to do dedicated themselves to End SARS Project amongst others.
In the article on Vogue, The Feminist Coalition is described as a group that identifies itself as a “community-building enterprise” and “women’s rights advocacy group”, rather than an organisation.
Back in 2018, Odunayo Eweniyi and Damilola Odufuwa saw an emergency to make sure that Nigerian women had a safe place, so they co-created Wine and Whine.
“I got the idea after seeing a Beyoncé concert,” Damilola said. “It was so beautiful watching this women-only show, and I immediately began to think about how to create a space like that for Nigerian women.”
Coming back to 2020, October the 9th, a shocking incident was making headlines on social media. Everyone was troubled by the killing of a yet-to-be-identified woman who was shot in the face by a mobile police officer outside a bus stop, in the Opebi area. Lagos Police Command underlined that the shooting had nothing to do with #endsars protest in the state. Yet the community believed that suddenly the protests could turn violent and women could be harmed. Feminist Coalition raised almost $388,000 in two weeks to support protests against police brutality and corruption.
Eweniyi and Odufuwa were rightfully chosen alongside 9 Inspirational female leaders 2020 who have offered thoughtful and decisive leadership this year.

Damilola Odufuwa in an exclusive interview with Nairametrics explained what impact Bitcoin has on Africa, particularly, the Nigerian economy:
“Over the past year, over 40,000 Africans have received free crypto education via Binance education programs/events. Our last virtual masterclass had over 5000 attendees and thousands more watching on YouTube. A huge population of the attendees is definitely Nigerians who are looking to acquire skills they can use to make some extra money while underemployed at their “9-5” and also for the many who didn’t receive a salary from their employers or lost jobs over the year,” Odufuwa said.
