Selena Gomez has dropped her first solo single of 2019, “Lose You to Love Me.”
In a statement, Gomez said: “This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album.
“I thought it was important to share the music, as I know many can relate to the fact that the road to self-discovery generally comes from the scars in one’s life.”
She added: “I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself.”
Lose You to Love Me
There’s little doubt who Selena’s new track is about. Whilst Gomez usually avoids the Bieber subject it appears she has returned to the troubled coupling of Jelena. The young relationship between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez fascinated much of the world for many years. And in her song, she appears damaged but deeply hopeful.
Whilst she doesn’t name Justin in the track there’s one lyric that establishes a timeline, leaving little doubt who it’s about. “In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing.” And it didn’t take long for fans to work out two months after Jelena split he had moved on to his now-wife Hailey Bieber.
Selena opens up about feeling sideswiped by her ex: “I gave my all and they all know it,” she sings. “You promised the world and I fell for it / I put you first and you adored it / Set fires to my forest / And you let it burn / Sang off-key in my chorus / ‘Cause it wasn’t yours.” And she concludes with some tough self-love: “ I needed to hate you to love me.”
iPhone 11 pro
Interestingly, the black-and-white video was shot on an iPhone 11 Pro. In the video Gomez shifts through moods, appearing heartbroken, distressed, distracted, pissed, prayerful and finally contented. Apple has released an excerpt of the video as part of the campaign. The unusual collaboration with the iPhone comes with the hashtag #shotoniphone.
