Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will present an ultimatum to fractious ruling parties on Monday to speed up government action or face his resignation, Italian newspapers have reported.
In a speech in the afternoon that he has no intention of being subjected to any European Union disciplinary procedure over public debt.
In a national address, he is expected to tell Italian citizens that he will go to Brussels to fight for their future with European Union bosses.
The European Commission wrote to Italy last week asking for an explanation as to why public debt rose in 2018 instead of falling as required, setting the stage for a possible legal clash with Italy’s eurosceptic coalition.
The Italian PM Conte has vowed to fight Brussels as EU budget but it is now set to erupt. The dramatic address is expected to take place after 5pm local time, in order to avoid a potentially catastrophic reaction in the Italian money markets.
A source in Italian media suggests that there are growing calls within the Five Star ranks to “immediately pull the plug” on their government coalition with League.
Italy and Brussels have clashed over the country’s mounting debt pile, which breaks EU fiscal rules.
The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, could trigger a three billion euro fine as a result.
Giuseppe Conte is an Italian jurist and politician serving as the 58th and current Prime Minister of Italy since 1 June 2018.
