6 Business Lessons From Jersey Mike’s Billionaire Peter Cancro
At 14 years old, Peter Cancro had a decision to make: What should he do for his summer job? It was 1972 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, the beachside town where Cancro grew up as the youngest of three in a working class family. At the time, there were a few different gigs for local teens looking to cash in on the summertime tourist rush at the Shore: man a stand on Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, boil crustaceans at the Lobster Shanty, scoop ice cream at Hoffman’s or “sprinkle” (lather in oil and herbs) sandwiches at Mike’s Subs. Cancro, who had just finished his freshman year at Point Pleasant High School, was undecided between Hoffman’s and Mike’s. He’d heard great reviews of Hoffman’s. But his older brother worked at Mike’s, so he went there.
