A man in Texas was arrested for shooting and killing his girlfriend for getting an abortion.
Harold Thompson was arrested on Thursday and charged with murder after the fatal shooting that took place on Wednesday, May 10.
Police say Thompson, 22, shot and killed his girlfriend Gabriella Gonzalez, 26, after she travelled out-of-state to get an abortion the night before.
Two witnesses, including Gonzalez’s sister, witnessed Thompson get in an argument with his girlfriend in a parking lot in Dallas. He attempted to choke her out, then shot her in the head moments later.
Security camera footage obtained by investigators confirmed these accounts.
‘The suspect attempts to put the complainant in a choke hold but the complainant shrugs him off,’ a police report on the incident reads. ‘The complainant and suspect continue to walk through the parking lot. Suspect Thompson then pulled out a firearm and shoots the complainant one time in the head.’
Thompson fired more shots at Gonzalez as she fell to the ground. He then ran from the scene, the police report states.
According to police, there was already an active warrant out for Thompson’s arrest before the shooting. In March, Gonzalez filed a police report after he attempted to strangle her.
Gonzalez told police that her boyfriend ‘beat her up multiple times throughout the entirety of their relationship.’ She also told investigators that she was pregnant with Thompson’s child at the time of the attacks.
Investigators then learned that Gonzalez had traveled to Colorado to get an abortion the night before. According to the police report, Thompson was likely the father of her child and had not wanted her to get the abortion.
Texas has banned nearly all abortions since the overturning of Roe v Wade in June 2022, forcing women seeking abortions to travel out-of-state for the procedure.
