There has been a raft of updates to WhatsApp of late to enhance user experience.

From editing messages to the ability to lock chats, the messaging service has had somewhat of an overhaul to keep up with its competitors.

Another update users can now enjoy is the ability to silence spam callers with the new Silence Unknown Callers function.

A WhatsApp blog gives users more insight as to how the new update works, saying: ‘Silence Unknown Callers is designed to give you more privacy and control of your incoming calls. It helps to automatically screen out spam, scams, and calls from unknown people for increased protection.’

But how can you send these unknown callers into the, well, unknown? Here’s what you need to know.

How to silence spam callers on WhatsApp

Silencing spam callers on WhatsApp is simple and takes only a few steps that even the most technophobic of us can follow.

It’s quick and simple to make use of the new feature (Picture: PA)

First, you need to open the WhatsApp app and open the Settings tap in the bottom right of the app.

Then, scroll down to ‘Account’ and then click ‘Privacy.’ Under this section, you’ll find ‘Calls’ which you then need to click.

There, you’ll see the ‘Silence Unknown Users’ feature which you can then toggle to on. To turn this off, all you need to do is click the toggle again.

And there you have it – no more spam callers.

With this latest update, WhatsApp has also introduced a new Privacy Checkup feature to allow users to customise how private their app is.

The new feature lets users access the app’s privacy settings to choose their own level of protection.

It takes WhatsApp users through a step-by-step guide of all the important privacy settings to create a tailored level of protection that strengthen the security of messages, calls, and personal information.

On the new updates, The WhatsApp blog reads: ‘Securing your private communication is important because we know people need a safe place to communicate.

‘We’re taking this message around the world in new ways to help communicate why this is so important. Starting this week, we’re encouraging people to check in with one another securely via a private message so friends and loved ones know they have a safe space to open up.’
