“We should have won Singapore” – how Verstappen now rates his F1 title chances

Verstappen Reflects on Title Hopes After Singapore Setback

Max Verstappen has expressed disappointment following his second-place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix, stating, “We should have won Singapore.” The reigning world champion believes a victory was crucial for his championship aspirations, as he faces an uphill battle with six races remaining in the 2025 F1 season.

    Title Aspirations Diminished

With a 63-point deficit to championship leader Oscar Piastri, Verstappen contemplates the implications of recent races. Despite Mclaren’s Andrea Stella asserting that the Dutchman remains a “serious threat,” Verstappen’s outlook is more cautious, indicating that without a win in Singapore, his chances of contending for a fifth consecutive title have significantly waned.

The Singapore Grand Prix: A Missed Opportunity

Verstappen asserts that he needed to secure a win in Singapore to maintain a competitive edge. “We really should have won in Singapore,” he lamented, reflecting on what could have been. After finishing ahead of both McLaren drivers on a track that traditionally does not favour Red Bull, he believed that points were within reach, but his performance only netted him a gain of six points on Piastri.

    • Mathematical Challenges: Verstappen surmised that he needs to claw back more than ten points per race to stand a chance but acknowledged the difficulty of doing so based on recent outcomes.

    Technical Challenges and Decisions

As the Singapore race unfolded, Verstappen pointed to missed opportunities, citing a strategic error in setup as a potential catalyst for the team’s underperformance. “Looking back, we were just a bit too conservative,” he shared, explaining that a decision to alter their car’s setup before qualifying did not yield the desired results.

    • Start Strategy Concerns: Verstappen attributed part of the setback to the team’s choice of soft tyres and a low-grip setting after rain affected the track. “I basically lost a car length straight away,” he explained.

    Looking Ahead to Austin

As the championship battle shifts focus to the Circuit of the Americas, Verstappen remains hopeful but realistic about Red Bull’s prospects. Acknowledging McLaren’s recent dominance in medium-speed corners, he noted, “We still need to make improvements, and hopefully, we can do that here.”

    • Race Weekend Strategy: Verstappen and his team are striving to maximise their performance by better understanding their car dynamics. “It’s about how we extract the maximum from a race weekend,” he concluded, emphasising the need for precision in the upcoming races.

    Conclusion: Action and Determination

Despite the recent setbacks, Verstappen remains committed to giving it his all. “If you already say, ‘Forget about it,’ then I might as well not race,” he declared with determination, showcasing his intent to challenge for the title against all odds. With six races left, the battle continues, and Verstappen is poised to fight until the very end.
