The Independent – Union’s warning to Labour over winter fuel row

    September 10, 2024

In an exclusive, the TUC president Matt Wrack tells The Independent the rise of Nigel Farage and summer riots should be ‘a wake-up call’ for Keir Starmer to ‘bring hope not austerity’ as the paper looks ahead at Tuesday’s Commons vote on cutting the winter fuel payments for almost 10 million pensioners.

A large image of Princess Kate and her family features on the front splash. The paper says the ‘three-minute video clip could be mistaken for a trailer of a romcom. But the Princess of Wales’s video could set a more human tone for the next generation of the royal family.’ The royal released a video updating the world on her cancer treatment – she has now completed chemotherapy and is set to return to work.

Union’s warning to Labour over winter fuel row

Sir Keir Starmer is braced for a clash with unions as his insistence on removing winter fuel payments from 10 million pensioners sparks a significant rebellion among Labour MPs.

With the prime minister expected to address the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Brighton, its president has warned that a second wave of austerity will boost the rise of the far right in Britain’s left-behind communities and bolster Nigel Farage’s push for power.

Matt Wrack, the Fire Brigades Union general secretary and current president of the TUC, has warned Sir Keir that his mandate for power is based on a collapse in support for the Tories “not love for Labour”.

The Princess of Wales has appeared in a deeply personal video with her family to confirm she will return to public duties following the completion of her chemotherapy treatment.

Kate’s heartfelt message about her cancer journey is spoken over images showing the Waleses and their children enjoying the outdoors, walking through woods and the couple shown cuddling as they hold hands.

She describes the past nine months since her serious health issues began as “incredibly tough for us as a family” and how the “cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone”, with the experience giving her a “new perspective on everything.”

In the video, Kate says: “Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.
