UN extends Kenya-led security mission in Haiti amid rising hunger, violence
The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the multinational policing mission in Haiti, which is led by Kenya, until October 2025. This mission aims to support Haitian national police in reclaiming areas under gang control but has not been transformed into a full UN peacekeeping operation, despite calls from Haiti’s government. The Council expressed deep concern over the country’s deteriorating security situation, which has seen widespread violence, criminal activity, and mass displacement. The World Food Programme also reported that half of Haiti’s population now faces severe hunger.
Haiti has been plagued by escalating gang violence, with over 3,600 people killed in just the first half of 2023, according to the UN. Kenya has pledged to increase its deployment to 2,500 personnel by January 2024, up from the current 410 officers. While the mission operates with UN backing, it is not directly run by the UN.
