There has been a major emergency response this evening following reports of an incident on First Avenue in Dagenham at around 5.35pm.

More than 10 police cars could be seen on the street, with an air ambulance also landing in the area.

One woman and a pair of children were found at the scene and taken to hospital.

The eight-year-old’s injuries are not life-threatening, the Metropolitan Police later confirmed.

Authorities are still awaiting updates in the condition of the woman and the two-year-old boy.

The man was also treated in hospital after ‘being taken unwell’, the Met said in a statement, but he was later discharged into police custody.

A crime scene remains in place on the street in Dagenham, with an increased police presence expected in the coming days.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, responsible for policing in Barking and Dagenham, said: ‘This is a truly shocking attack and I want to thank local residents for their assistance and patience while we deal with this incident.

‘At this early stage, we believe those involved were known to each other and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

‘A crime scene will remain in place for some time while our officers carry out vital work and you will see an increased policing presence in the area over the coming days.’
