Trump warns Putin to end Ukraine war or face sanctions
Donald Trump has threatened to impose steep tariffs and new sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin does not end the war in Ukraine.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed his efforts to resolve the conflict would be a “very big favor” to Russia and its president. He previously vowed to negotiate a settlement to the war, which began in 2014 and escalated with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, within a single day.
Russia has yet to respond officially. However, senior officials have recently suggested there may be a narrow opportunity to engage with the incoming U.S. administration.
Putin has expressed willingness to negotiate but insists Ukraine must accept Russia’s territorial gains, now covering about 20% of Ukrainian land. He also opposes Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
Meanwhile, Ukraine remains firm in its refusal to permanently surrender territory, though President Volodymyr Zelensky has hinted at a temporary compromise on some occupied areas.
