Robert E. Crimo III, 24, who admitted to a 2022 mass shooting at a suburban Chicago Independence Day parade was set to be sentenced Thursday, a day after survivors and witnesses gave emotional testimony about how their lives have changed since he killed seven people and hurt dozens more. Crimo is certain to spend the rest of his life behind bars. He pleaded guilty to 21 counts of first-degree murder — three counts for each person killed — and 48 counts of attempted murder.
Americans Sour on Trump’s Handling of the Economy, Reuters/Ipsos Poll Finds
Despite being elected on the promises of fighting inflation and boosting the US economy, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows he’s failing on both fronts, according to Americans. Trump has kicked off his second term as president with an aggressive economic agenda, sparking trade wars as he hits US trading partners with tariffs. Just 37% of respondents to the six-day poll that concluded on Monday approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, down from 42% in the hours after his January 20 inauguration.
Democratic States Sue Trump over Tariffs
A coalition of Democratic states is suing to halt Donald Trump’s international trade tariffs, arguing only Congress has the power to levy them. The April 23 suit was brought by Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Vermont. California filed a separate lawsuit over the tariffs earlier this month. Many of those same states have also sued Trump over other executive actions, from international student visa cancellations to federal funding halts.
