Tom Cruise has given his take on Mission: Impossible co-star Simon Pegg’s criticism of his British accent.
The movie star and producer, 60, was in London on Monday night to attend the swanky premiere of the latest film in the franchise in which he stars as Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt – Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh instalment.
For the most recent five movies – all the way since 2006’s Mission: Impossible III – Simon has appeared as technician-turned-field-agent Benji Dunn, a member of Ethan’s IMF team.
Having spent so many years working alongside Hollywood royalty, Simon reckons Tom is a man of many talents.
However, he did come up with something he is confident he’s better at that Tom – and that’s accents.
After explaining how he struggled to ‘even drive a car up a hill’ in one complicated scene from the new movie, while Tom ‘is jumping off cliffs on bikes’, the Shaun of the Dead actor, 53, did suggest he was better at different voices and accents – including, of course, British.

‘I’m better than him at accents, we mess around a lot on set and when you hear him try to do a British accent it’s hilarious… it’s somewhere between Dick Van [Dyke]…
‘I mean, Tom Cruise can pretty much do anything, but he’s never gonna play a Brit,’ Simon told The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X.
Speaking to Tom at the movie’s premiere in London’s Leicester Square, he agreed with Simon that his was a much better British accent than Tom’s, telling Metro.co.uk exclusively: ‘Yes I think he does.’

‘His Michael Caine is much better than mine!’ he added, referring to their attempts on set to ape the iconic tones of screen legend Sir Michael, known for his roles in films like Zulu, The Ipcress File and The Italian Job, as well as The Dark Knight franchise, alongside Christian Bale.
‘He’s been teaching me it. It’s much better than mine,’ Tom acknowledged.

The New York-native actor was actually a guest at Sir Michael’s intimate 90th birthday celebrations in March, alongside an eclectic bunch including former Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams and Loose Women star Denise Welch.
So he’s had a front-row seat to the man in real life, if that helps improve his future efforts…
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits UK cinemas on Wednesday July 10.
