Tokyo 2020: Team GB strike gold in team eventing at Tokyo Olympics
Team GB has bagged a gold medal in team eventing at the Tokyo Olympics for the first time in almost 50 years.
The medal is now Team GB’s 11th gold at the Games – and the team’s 33rd medal in total.
All three riders – Laura Collett, Tom McEwen and Oliver Townend – were making Games debuts.
The team led by 17.9 penalties in the closing stages of the competition, following their outstanding cross-country rounds on Sunday.
Team GB finished on a score of 86.30, with Australia taking silver and France taking bronze.
It’s Team GB’s third equestrian medal at the Tokyo Olympics following Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Hester and Charlotte Fry winning dressage team bronze, and Dujardin also collecting an individual bronze.
It is also only Britain’s third gold in eventing in total.
Attention now turns to the individual finals later today, with Townend starting the showjumping phase in the silver medal position bedding Germany.
McEwen is in bronze position and Collett is in fifth, putting them all in reaching distance of further medals.
