This man told his girlfriend she’s not as hot as Maya Jama — and the internet has opinions

There are the Pedro Pascals, Jonathon Baileys and Paul Mescals of the world – and then, there’s your boyfriend.

While to you, your beloved may be the hottest person on the planet, existing in a class all their own, you know that objectively, there are other guys out there more likely to win the Sexist Man Alive award.

Only, you probably wouldn’t tell him that.

Well, it turns out that one TikTok boyfriend missed this particular memo.

In a video posted by his girlfriend, creator, Tiah Slattery, boyfriend Luke shares his frank views on model, Maya Jama.

    ‘She’s hotter than you,’ he says. ‘It’s not an issue… I’m a f*cking realist.’

‘You’re meant to think I’m the hottest person on Earth,’ Tiah replies.

‘No I’m not,’ adds Luke, bluntly. ‘I tell you the truth, I’m meant to tell you the truth.’

‘I’m happy for you to lie,’ she adds.

While a giggling Tiah clearly finds the whole exchange harmless (and we should point out that Luke also adds he’s not as hot as Maya’s beau, Stormzy), the internet wasn’t quite so forgiving.

‘Would never in a million years want to willingly say this to someone I love,’ wrote one commenter.

‘The way he would never hear from me again after that,’ added another.

Other users questioned why Luke felt the need to say this – whether it’s true or not.

‘Why even say it?’ asked one. ‘Seems like he just wants to tear you down.’

A second said: ‘He can think whatever he wants but I don’t know if it’s necessary to tell your partner.’

And a third simply wrote: ‘Truth without empathy is cruelty.’

Luke was pretty honest with his feelings (Picture: TikTok / Tiah Slattery)

But others joked that Luke has a point (have you seen Maya Jama?), suggesting these comments are NBD in some relationships.

‘The way that I would literally guide my man into Maya Jama if he ever got the opportunity, she’s IMMACULATE,’ one person joked.

Another added: ‘My bf is obsessed with Maya Jama as well,’ but I can’t really blame him.’

Some pointed out it’s all about the context and wider conversation: ‘My partner and I think it’s silly to not admit that other people are hot but I would literally never say “this person is hotter than you.’”

Another added: ‘Objective beauty and being in love beauty are just not the same.’

The video – which currently has 3.4million views – has divided us here at Metro HQ.

Some say it’s a non-issue – and they’ve even made similar remarks to their partners before – while others think it displays a lack of respect.

So, to settle the issue once and for all, we went to Hayley Quinn, dating expert for Match, the UK’s number one dating brand.

‘If your partner tells you, “You’re not as hot as Maya Jama”, it would be easy to take offence,’ says Hayley. ‘Surely, if there’s one person in the world we should be able to rely on to build our self-esteem, it should be our partners?’

But, Hayley says that you can’t generalise all partnerships.

She explains: ‘In truth, every relationship is different, and whilst you should never put down your partner’s looks or try to undermine the other’s self-esteem, for some relationships, joking about appearance or celebrity crushes could be a way that a couple demonstrates affection for one another.’

What’s really important is to take feedback from the situation you’re in. ‘Even if you find something funny, or like to call a spade a spade, don’t assume your partner will receive this information in the same way,’ says Hayley.

‘Likewise, if you’re on the receiving end of a comment you don’t like, don’t laugh it off if that’s not how you truly feel – remember, above all to show self love.

‘Instead, communicate to your partner what makes you feel comfortable, and of course look out for partners who are able to hear how you want to be treated, and improve how they connect with you.’
