Things that have lasted longer than Liz Truss as Prime Minister

Liz Truss is officially the shortest serving Prime Minister in British history – resigning after just 44 days in office.

The PM’s tenure came to a disastrous end after frenzied plotting from her own MPs, with reports of jostling, manhandling, bullying and shouting outside the parliamentary lobbies.

It has been abject chaos for the entire government and Conservative Party, with former Home Secretary Suella Braverman and former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng both sacked barely a week apart.

She promised ‘growth, growth, growth,’ during her leadership campaign but the reality of it all turned out to be very different indeed.

Here, we take a look through some of the things that lasted longer than Ms Truss as Prime Minister – starting with the last leadership contest itself.

    Conservative Party leadership contest

It was Rishi v Liz in the final Conservative Party leadership contest (Picture: AP)

When Boris Johnson was kicked out of Number 10 back in July, a Conservative Party leadership contest started which in political terms now feels like a lifetime ago.

Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugenhadt, Nadhim Zahawi, Rehman Chishti, Sajid Javid and Grant Shapps all threw their hats into the ring to steer the steady ship.

But it was Ms Truss who came up top.

The process involved 12 public hustings events which lasted seven weeks – one whole week longer than Ms Truss was in office as PM.

Rihanna’s single ‘Umbrella’ at Number 1 in the UK charts

It is a tune known up and down the country and defined the year 2007 when it was released.

So it is no surprise the single was number one in the UK charts longer than Liz Truss was prime minister – for a whopping 10 weeks.

The single, from the singer’s third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad, is recognised as one of her greatest hits which propelled Rihanna from rising pop act into superstardom.

    Sam Allardyce as England manager

Sam Allardyce was England manager for 67 days – a whole 23 days longer than Liz Truss being Prime Minister.

He is well known for leaving his post as England manager by mutual agreement with the Football Association after one match.

He was embroiled with scandal at the time in 2016 following allegations of mispractice.

He won his first and only game in charge on 4 September, as an Adam Lallana goal deep into injury-time was enough to beat Slovakia on the opening day of qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The same cannot be said for Liz.

The siege of Constantinople by the Ottoman empire

The fall of Constantinople by the Ottoman empire marked the end of the Middle Ages in 1453.

While the attacking Ottoman Army significantly outnumbered Constantinople’s defenders, the siege was still faster than Liz Truss’ time in office – 53 days.

Hailed as a watershed moment marking the effective end of the last remains of the Roman Empire, right now it feels like the Conservative Party are holding on to their last remains of political integrity.

Kim Kardashian’s marriage to Kris Humphries

Kim K is well-known for her marriage to rapper Kanye West but once upon a time she was married to a man called Kris Humphries.

Kris Humphries is a former professional basketball player and started dating Kim in 2010.

They eventually married in August 2011 but just 72 days later the pair had filed for divorce.

Several media outlets at the time claimed the marriage was a publicity stunt to promote the Kardashian’s family brand.

Still, the marriage even if it may have been a stunt lasted longer than Liz Truss’ premiership which really is saying something.

    London 2012’s Olympic Torch Relay

A time when the country was united, before all the political mess and when the news cycle just felt that little bit more quiet. We are talking about the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Hailed as a success for the country, showcasing some of the greatest sporting talent in one of the greatest cities on the planet.

An important part of this is the Olympic torch relay, which involves runners touring different parts of the country with the torch.

This lasted two months between May and July 2012.

Everything just felt a bit more stable just a decade ago. The same can not be said for the government and the Tory party.

    Last year’s Strictly Come Dancing

Strictly Come Dancing is loved by people up and down the country (Picture: PA)

Who doesn’t love a bit of Strictly? The night’s start drawing in, the weather takes a turn for the worst but we’ll always be able to switch on Strictly and watch a bit of dancing once a week.

Each series usually lasts quite a while – as famous faces battle it out to become the best dancer.

But if someone said a series would last longer than a Prime Minister? You would laugh right in their face.

Believe it or not – last year’s series ran from September 18, 2021 to December 18, 2021, more than double the amount of time Liz Truss was Prime Minister.

    Love Island this summer

From Molly-Mae and Tommy to Ekin-Su and Davide, Love Island has fans gripped each year as muscly buff guys and size six models enter the villa to find ‘love’.

Like Strictly, Love Island is known to roll on a bit time-wise and series 8 lasted 58 days, two weeks longer than Liz Truss is Prime Minister.

She’s out of a job now, maybe Liz will be on series 9 of Love Island?

Gnarles Barkley’s single Crazy at number one

‘Crazy’ by Gnarles Barkley was a massive song in 2005 and was number one for nine weeks because it was so good.

This just proves the timeless song is just 100% better than Liz Truss and her premiership which turned out to be ‘crazy’ right towards the end.

    JedWard on XFactor

The Irish duo with the wacky sticking up hair – you’ll remember these two favourite faces from the 2009 series of X Factor.

While the pair were not to everyone’s taste, they still managed to last two months on the show, more time than Liz Truss was in office.

Just goes to show that while their singing skills were average, this beats Liz Truss’ less than average premiership.

    Daily Star lettuce

And last but by no means least, the Daily Star lettuce has outlived the Prime Minister!

The paper placed a lettuce by a photograph of Ms Truss nine days ago to see if it would outlive the Prime Minister.

She lost the race to a 60p vegetable and finally gave up on her attempt to beat the lettuce today.

The Daily Star’s Lettuce is now 1000/1 to be one of your five (Prime Ministers) a day.

And who knows, during these politically tumultuous times – anything really could happen.
