The explosion of lights that adorn the streets of Madrid, the Christmas markets that seem to come out of a story and the people running from one place to another trying to buy gifts now so as not to fall into last-minute trouble remind us that Christmas is almost here. Madrid is trying these days to emulate that magical place where you can make plans with family and friends to toast the year that is ending. However, in order to lower the revs and not go crazy when December has just started, Madrid Enreda Te Enreda brings this week Host Cafe, Gaston Wine Bar y Brava Dollthree recommendations for plans to have something relaxed in the bar is coming or wine bars fashionable. The Christmas spirit can wait.
Coffee and then wine
Host (located in the Bretón de los Herreros street, 35) is a new cafeteria with specialty coffee that turns into a wine bar at night, ideal for a drink after work. “The best stories happen with one or several glasses of wine and are told with a cup of coffee,” says its founder, Verónica Faccini, 31 years old.
Faccini studied Business Administration and organized events in Colombia. A few years ago, he moved to Madrid to do a master’s degree and fell in love with the Bar Tony 2 piano. “I stayed because I was fascinated by the idea of going to sing in that bar. “I even took singing classes to be the star of the night,” he says, laughing. From a business catering Host came about thanks to her sister Mariana, who is in charge of the kitchen.
Mariana selects each wine according to the client’s personality and what she is going to marinate it with. “We look for wine brands from women winemakers in Spain to whom we want to give visibility,” she says. In the mornings, the stars of the establishment are the coffees and toasts. “Host changes through food to generate different spaces,” says Verónica. The average ticket is 15 euros.
A wine and some songs
Gaston Wine Bar (in the Lagasca street, 11) it’s a wine bar that seeks to make wine fun while accompanied by good music. “We have a vinyl DJ who makes wine a party,” says one of its founders, Daniel Hueso. The business started in Mexico and has just landed in Madrid with great success. “Madrid has received us in the best way from the first day. We opened in the middle of August and we already had waiting lines of people from all over the world, mainly Spain, Mexico, France, Scotland, Colombia and Argentina,” says Hueso. In Gastón they do not accept reservations.
In the place it is essential to drink a good wine from any of its labels. The selection was made by sommelier Eneida Fuentes, Mexican who has been recognized in different countries as one of the 10 women who are changing the world of wine. The perfect experience to live in Gastón would be to start with a glass of wine, try some of their dishes, which are always designed to be shared, and let the night fall to the rhythm of disco music.
A wine without pretensions
Brava Doll (in the calle Gutemberg, 5) was born from improvisation and a bit of the madness of its founders, sommeliers who have created a space with wines from nine countries, 56 regions and 92 wineries next to the Atocha station. “It is an unpretentious place, without that pompous touch that sometimes surrounds the world of wine. We were looking for a relaxed and authentic atmosphere, but with quality products. So, one day we said, ‘What if we open our own site?’ Fifteen days later, Muñeca Brava was already a reality!” say its owners, an Extremadura native and an Argentinian.
At the premises you can go have a glass of wine, a craft beer or a pizza. However, the best experience is being able to attend one of the natural wine tastings that the owners themselves do. “We are a magnet for those looking for quality without posturing, and that is exactly what defines our clientele: varied, authentic and eager to enjoy. In fact, it is increasingly difficult to find a day on the weekend where there are not one or two groups celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, graduations… We have even hosted pre-weddings,” they say.
