EU News is reporting from Ceuta, where authorities are working to restore order after the unprecedented influx of migrants. Along the breakwater where at least 60,000 people crossed irregularly, workers have begun installing new protective barriers in an effort to prevent another mass arrival.

Despite those efforts, the effects of the crisis remain visible. EU News found migrants still wandering the streets, while authorities believe an unknown number are hiding in the homes of friends and relatives.

Speaking to EU News, one resident recalled the moment the crowds arrived.

“Honestly, it was frightening. When that whole crowd came rushing in… yes, we were scared. We really were. Then the Armed Forces arrived—thank God—and they managed to restore some order.”

The Ceuta Business Confederation says local businesses have resumed operations, albeit “with caution”, after residents spent more than 24 hours sheltering in their homes. During the lockdown, most shops remained closed, leaving parts of the city facing shortages of basic goods, including fresh bread.

Among those still in the city is a young migrant who told EU News he came in search of a better future.

“I came here to find a new life. My father, my whole family, they’re poor. Now we’re here, trying to survive, sleeping on the streets. Life is really hard.”

He said this is not his first time in Ceuta and that he has no intention of leaving for now.

Normally, the city would now be celebrating its Patron Saint festivities in honour of the Virgin of Africa. This year, however, the celebrations have been cancelled – an extraordinary decision that underlines the scale of the crisis. While authorities are trying to restore normality, the mood in Ceuta remains one of fear, uncertainty and anger, but also compassion, as the city continues to grapple with the aftermath of one of the largest irregular border crossings in its history.
