Texas abortion ban: US justice department sues state over extreme new law
The i says US President Biden‘s justice department has sued Texas in an attempt to block enforcement of a near-total ban on abortions in the US state.
Last week, the Supreme Court let stand the law which will mean women are no longer able to terminate pregnancies after six weeks. It does not have exceptions for pregnancies through rape or incest.
The justice department’s move is part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to push back on the most extreme abortion regulation to be implemented since Roe v Wade in 1973, during which the court ruled abortions were a constitutional right.
