Tanzanian activist abducted in Kenya has been released
Prominent Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai, who was abducted by armed men in Nairobi, Kenya, on Sunday, has been safely released just hours later.
Amnesty International Kenya confirmed the incident, saying Tsehai was “forced” into a vehicle in broad daylight. After her release, Tsehai posted a video to her 1.3 million followers on X, appearing shaken but relieved, stating, “I have been saved.”
Tsehai is a vocal critic of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, accusing her government of bringing “tyranny back” to the country. She is known for her advocacy on land rights and free expression.
Faith Odhiambo, president of the Law Society of Kenya, announced that they had worked to secure Tsehai’s release, warning against Kenya being used as a hub for abductions.
“We are sending a warning. We will not allow our country to be used as a haven for picking up individuals,” she said at an evening press conference.
