Afghanistan: Taliban leaders ‘major row’ at presidential palace – report
There has been a reported “major row” between leaders of the Taliban, just days after they set up the new Afghanistan government, according to senior Taliban officials, who spoke to the BBC.
A brawl broke out at the presidential palace in the capital Kabul between two rival factions.
The report says the argument appeared to centre on who did the most to secure the victory over the United States and how power was divided up in the new cabinet.
But the Taliban have officially denied the reports.
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August and have since declared the country an “Islamic Emirate.”
The new interim cabinet is all male and made up of senior Taliban figures – some who are known for attacks on US forces over the past twenty years.
A Taliban source told the BBC that Mr Baradar and Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani had exchanged “strong words” as their follower brawled with each other.
The source added the argument broke out because Mr Baradar – the new deputy PM – was unhappy about the structure of their interim government.
The row stemmed from divisions over who in the Taliban should take credit for their victory in Afghanistan.
