Sunday Papers – ‘Putin cannot stay in power’

US president Joe Biden makes most of the front pages after he delivered a speech saying Russia’s Vladimir Putin could not remain in power. The White House later made it clear the president’s words were not official US policy and Biden is not calling for a regime change in Russia.

Prince William’s statement – released at the end of his eight-day Caribbean tour – also makes several of the tabloid front pages. Other top stories this morning include the ongoing Ukrainian war and the fallout from the chancellor’s spring statement.

The Sunday Times – NHS maternity scandal victims were ‘silenced’

The Sunday Times reports on the deaths of 300 babies, for which it blames an NHS trust’s “fixation on natural births”. The findings of a five-year investigation into the scandal at the Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust lead the Times – the paper says the inquiry will report this week that 300 babies died or were left brain damaged because of a “fixation on natural births” meant their mothers were denied caesarean sections.

The Sunday Telegraph – ‘For God’s sake this man can’t remain in power’

The Sunday Telegraph reports on US President Joe Biden saying Vladimir Putin should not be allowed to remain in power but adds that the White House was forced to “back-track” when it appeared Mr Biden was calling for regime change in Russia.  The comments from the president reportedly left US policy “in chaos” and it reported that the White House said “immediately” after the speech that the remark should not be taken as official policy despite the fact that it appeared to have been part of his prepared speech.

The Observer – Biden: ‘butcher’ Putin cannot be allowed to stay in power

The Observer leads with the words of the US president, who described Vladimir Putin as a “butcher”, and said he could not be allowed to remain in power. The paper calls the comments a “dramatic shift in US policy” as the president told the crowd gathered at Poland’s presidential palace that Putin “cannot remain in power.”

Sunday Mirror – Wills: Let the people decide

The Sunday Mirror reports on the possibility of other Commonwealth nations deciding to ditch the monarchy. Prince William’s remarks at the end of his eight-day tour of the Caribbean leads the Mirror. Asked about the future of the Commonwealth and its leadership, Prince William said: “Catherine and I are committed to public service. For us that’s not telling people what to do.”

Sunday Express – Solve cost of living crisis or you’ll lose election

The Observer says the speech signalled a “dramatic shift in US policy” and an intention to position the US “as a leader in global affairs after four years of disengagement during the Trump administration”.

The Telegraph is more critical of Mr Biden, saying he went “off script” and had left US policy “in chaos”. It says the Kremlin is likely to seize on them “to bolster its claims that Nato is an aggressive alliance”.

The online-only Independent reports that the majority of UK voters think the government should ditch visa requirements for Ukrainian refugees and allow unlimited numbers to seek sanctuary in the UK.

Several of the tabloids lead with Prince William’s comments that the people should decide the Commonwealth’s future. The Mail on Sunday sees the statement from William as an admission that he may never succeed the Queen as head of the Commonwealth. Whilst the Sunday People has the headline “Will of the people”, while the Mirror goes for: “Wills: let the people decide”.
