A comedian came away from his performance at the Edinburgh Fringe with more than he bargained for after he was socked in the face by an angry punter.

Colin Higgins, a 40-year-old stand-up comedian, was taken to hospital for stitches in his face following an unexpected bust up with an audience member.

The Carluke, Lanarkshire native was performing during his slot at the famous Fringe on Friday night when he was punch square in the mouth.

Police are now investigating the incident that left the budding star bleeding and requiring medical attention.

Colin said once he got off stage, according to The Daily Record: I got the shock of my life. Police were called and the woman was arrested.

‘It’s the last thing you expect when you have an audience roaring with laughter. There was blood everywhere. To say I was stunned is an understatement. I didn’t know what to do.

‘It’s still very painful but the show must go on. I’ll be left with a nasty scar.

‘It’s ironic that over the years I’ve moved people to tears with laughter – it’s a first that I’m the one who’s crying. The staff at Leith Dept were just incredible.’

The publication also reported that a spokesperson from Police Scotland further revealed: ‘We were called around 4.30pm on Friday, 4 August, to a report of an assault at a premises on Leith Walk in Edinburgh.

‘A 36-year-old woman was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.’

At the time of the incident, Colin – who has made numerous TV and radio appearances – was attempting to thrill crowds with his Painspotting show on stage at Leith Depot.

He was said to be feeling fearful about his upcoming gig at Renfrew’s Glynhill Hotel on Friday, where he is due to perform alongside fellow comic Bruce Morton – who embodied the role of Scotland’s creepiest undertaker Mr Sheathing in comedy series Still Game.

Colin joked about working alongside the iconic actor: ‘If he starts giving me the side eye or looks like he’s fitting me up for a wooden overcoat, I’m off that stage and on my toes that’s for sure!’

Metro.co.uk contacted Colin’s reps and Edinburgh Fringe for comment.
