Sir Paul McCartney first UK billionaire musician
Sir Paul McCartney has made history by becoming the first UK musician to achieve billionaire status, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The 81-year-old former Beatle saw his wealth increase by £50 million in the past year, thanks to touring, the enduring value of his music catalogue, and Beyoncé’s cover of his 1968 classic, “Blackbird.”
Topping the list as the richest individuals in the UK once again are Gopi Hinduja and his family, whose wealth has reached an unprecedented £37.2 billion. This marks the largest fortune ever recorded by the Sunday Times.
Other notable names on the list include Sir Elton John, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, and David and Victoria Beckham. The minimum wealth required to make the list was £350 million.
This year’s Rich List features 350 individuals and families with a combined wealth of £795.3 billion, a sum greater than the entire economy of Poland, according to the Sunday Times.
But Robert Watts, compiler of the Sunday Times Rich List, said this year’s list suggested that “Britain’s billionaire boom has come to an end”.
“Many of our home-grown entrepreneurs have seen their fortunes fall and some of the global super rich who came here are moving away,” he added.
Watts said that “thousands of British livelihoods rely on the super-rich to some extent”.
“We’ll have to wait and see whether we have now reached peak billionaire, and what that means for our economy,” he added.
