Senior Hamas official killed as Israel orders fresh evacuation
An Israeli air strike killed four people, including senior Hamas official Ehab Al-Ghussein, at a school in Gaza City, according to Palestinian sources. Al-Ghussein had been overseeing Hamas government affairs in Gaza City and northern Gaza for three months. The Israeli army says the strike targeted terrorists hiding in the school and aimed to minimise civilian casualties.
Witnesses reported the attack hit the Holy Family School, where many were taking shelter. Al-Ghussein, formerly a deputy labour minister and interior ministry spokesman for Hamas, was an important figure in the administration, though his death is not seen as a military setback for Hamas. The region has seen numerous Hamas officials killed over the past nine months.
Separately, the Israeli military issued an evacuation order for central Gaza City, causing families to flee their homes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that any ceasefire must allow Israel to resume operations until its goals are achieved, including dismantling Hamas’s military capabilities and returning hostages.
The conflict escalated after a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, over 38,000 Palestinians have been killed in the ongoing Israeli offensive.
