Sánchez returns to Valencia after DANA to promise 2.2 billion euros to the mayors

In Pedro Sánchez’s first visit to Valencia after the one he made to Paiporta in November with the Kings and which was interrupted by the indignation of those affected, the President of the Government has announced more money for the town councils that continue trying to recover normality. almost three months after the floods.

After meeting with the 28 mayors of the municipalities that suffered the most intensely from the effects of DANA and are still in a situation of Emergency 2, Pedro Sánchez announced two new measures with which the central government will increase its contribution to the reconstruction of DANA and that will mean 2,200 million euros for these locations.

The first of them is that the State is going to finance 100% of the reconstruction of municipal infrastructure, compared to the 50% that it had initially announced. According to the president, it is estimated that 1.7 billion euros will be needed to repair or rebuild hundreds of buildings owned by the city councils.

Among these infrastructures he cited nearly 100 administrative centers, 45 nursery schools, 58 libraries, 55 sports centers, 40 day centers and 16 markets.

In addition, he announced that “the Government of Spain will also take charge of 100% of the costs of reconstruction of the water supply, sanitation and purification infrastructure in all the affected municipalities.” According to what several of the mayors told him, it was one of the great concerns given the difficulty of being able to meet emergency expenses with local budgets.

Regarding the controversy over the time that has passed since his last visit to the affected area and when asked if he plans to go to DANA ground zero, he insisted that efforts are now focused on reconstruction. “I will come on other occasions and I will be delighted to meet with Mr. Mazón,” he said when also asked about the fact that he did not meet with the president of the Generalitat in the face of continuous criticism between Administrations.

In this environment of continuous political confrontation, he also criticized the popular party after he voted against the omnibus decree in Congress. “What I would say to the groups that voted against, particularly the PP, is to reconsider this destructive opposition that causes social pain,” he said, referring to the fact that the non-approval has left measures such as some of those planned for the affected by DANA or the revaluation of pensions.
