Ruben Neves insists he remains fully committed to Al-Hilal and has no intention of returning to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

The former Wolves midfielder’s move to the Saudi Pro League caused a stir in the summer, given he appeared to be coming into the peak years of his career.

Speculation had been mounting that Newcastle – who are also owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – want to sign the Portugal international in January.

But when asked if it was possible, Neves said: ‘I don’t go.

‘I think that’s rumours because of the owner of the clubs of course, and because I’ve played in England as well.

‘There was Newcastle interest before I came here but I’m really happy here, my family’s really happy, so I’m having a great time.’

Newcastle are in the midst of an injury crisis that shows few signs of easing with Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock both unavailable for tonight’s game against Manchester United.

Arsenal, too, are in the market for midfield reinforcements in January with Thomas Partey unavailable until January before he joins up with the Ghana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mikel is currently reliant on the likes of Declan Rice and Jorginho, but the upturn in the fortunes of summer signing of Kai Havertz has represented a welcome boost for the Arsenal manager.

‘He’s not someone that wants to be there in the frontline or at least he doesn’t show it in that way, but then if you ask him to go to war, he will be the first one down there, but he doesn’t want to take that credit and I think he deserved that credit on the day,’ said Arteta speaking ahead of Saturday’s game against Wolves.

‘He’s been very positive and he’s been so influential in a good way to his teammates and the team, but obviously his confidence grows. He’s really looking forward to something.

‘When you feel loved, when you feel respected and when you feel admired, things are much easier. Your energy is better, your body language is better and I think that’s the way he’s felt in the last few days.’
