Roy Keane reveals worry over Manchester United despite FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham

Roy Keane says he has ‘lost a bit of confidence’ in Manchester United despite their FA Cup quarter-final victory over Fulham.

United benefitted from three Fulham red cards to come from a goal down to reach a record-extending 31st FA Cup semi-final.

Fulham looked on course to reach only their second FA Cup semi-final after Aleksander Mitrovic put the visitors in front.

But in the space of two crazy minutes, Fulham lost two players, their manager and the lead, much to the joy and amusement of the home fans.

Attempting to make a goal-line clearance, ex-Arsenal and Chelsea winger Willian was sent off after a VAR check for blocking Jadon Sancho’s shot with his arm.

Fulham boss Marco Silva was then sent off before referee Chris Kavanagh even reached the pitchside monitor and Mitrovic also received his marching orders when he grabbed the referee to complain about the decisions.

Following the drama, Bruno Fernandes slotted home the penalty and minutes later Marcel Sabitzer put United in front with his first goal for the club since his January loan from Bayern Munich.

The nine men of Fulham faced an almost impossible task to take the tie to extra-time and Fernandes put the match to bed with an injury-time goal, sending Manchester United into the FA Cup semi-finals, where they will meet Brighton.

United’s victory keeps their treble hopes alive but Old Trafford legend Keane was not particularly impressed by the performance and said Erik ten Hag would be ‘hugely disappointed’ by the display.

‘The manager will still be hugely disappointed. Man United were so poor it was almost unbelievable,’ Keane said on ITV.

‘They’ve found a way in the previous [FA Cup] games. Today was just self-destruction from Fulham. You need a bit of luck and they’ve certainly had their fair share this season.

‘But I’ve lost a bit of confidence watching United recently. In the last few games, they’ve picked up some bad habits.

‘If they turn up with that attitude in the semi-final, Brighton will beat them. Hopefully the manager gives them a bit of a kick up the back-side.’

Keane also gave his take on Fulham’s implosion, adding: ‘It was self-destruction really. The reaction from the manager and the players was not good.

‘It’s an emotional game but it’s a mad 90 seconds and it’s cost them ultimately. I’ve got no sympathy for Fulham, they had an opportunity and they blew it.’

While Manchester United will face Brighton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, Manchester City were drawn against Championship side Sheffield United.
