Rio Ferdinand offers Alejandro Garnacho transfer theory amid Chelsea links

Rio Ferdinand offers Alejandro Garnacho transfer theory amid Chelsea links | Football

Rio Ferdinand believes that Alejandro Garnacho has no desire to leave Manchester United but may be forced out of the club as he doesn’t suit Ruben Amorim’s system.

Despite being a product of their academy, United are open to considering offers for Garnacho as they look to boost their dire financial situation.

Napoli have already had a bid rejected for Garnacho as United initially held out for a £70 million transfer fee for the 20-year-old.

Chelsea are also exploring the possibility of signing Garnacho before the end of the January transfer window and the winger’s two agents were at Stamford Bridge on Monday night to watch Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Wolves.

The Blues are now expected to lodge their first bid for Garnacho in the coming days, with United said to have lowered their asking price to around €65m (£54.8m).

While Garnacho is said to prefer a move to Chelsea rather than Napoli, Ferdinand instead suggested that the 20-year-old would prefer to stay put and fight for his place in Amorim’s squad.

‘I dont think he would be the one initiating this move. I don’t think he’s the one going: ‘I want to leave’,’ Ferdinand said after his former side scraped past Rangers with a 2-1 win in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

‘I think he’s the one going: ‘You want me to go? You’re listening to offers? Well, okay, if that’s the case then I will start talking as well’. And I think that’s the situation here.’

Ferdinand, however, did concede that Garnacho’s imperfect fit with Amorim’s system may explain why the club were willing to consider letting him go.

‘He’s the one player who actually runs off the ball without the ball. He’s always very direct but I think the system is going to be the one thing that goes against him,’ he added.

‘Amorim doesn’t play out-and-out wide players, he wants his wingers to play inside the pitch and that’s not natural for Garnacho. I don’t think we see the best of him in those areas.

‘That will be one of the main factors that go against him staying at the football club and they may listen to offers for him but there is no doubting that this kid’s got a huge talent and huge ability.’

Amorim, meanwhile, refused to entertain speculation surrounding Garnacho’s future at the club.

‘I’m focused on the games and he’s here, he’s a player for Manchester United. [He] was really important for us today and let’s see in the next days,’ he said after the win against Rangers.

Asked about Garnacho’s display on the night, he added: ‘I think he’s improving in every aspect of the game. He was better today playing inside, also outside, changing positions, he’s improving the recovering position.

‘You can see it until 90 minutes he’s always there recovering and helping, sometimes showing some frustration and that is good because he wants more.

‘I think he has potential to be so much better in every situation in the game. What I can say is he understood what I was trying to do, was really clear. I just want to help them but in the end it’s them that do the job.’
