Russia is said to have fired a record number of drones against Ukraine overnight: 188, according to data from the country’s air force.
During the day, Ukraine and NATO hold a meeting about a high-profile Russian attack with a new hypersonic robot.
Buildings and important infrastructure in several regions have been damaged in the drone strikes, which included Iranian Shahed drones, according to the statement quoted by AFP.
In the capital, Kyiv, flight alarms are said to have been wailing for five hours during the night.
The Russian forces are now advancing significantly faster than they did throughout 2023, writes the American think tank American Institute for the Study of War ( ISW ) in an analysis. This with reference to developments in Donetsk, among others, where Russia has had success in recent weeks.
The information comes as NATO ambassadors prepare to meet Ukrainian representatives in Brussels to discuss last week’s Russian attack with a new hypersonic robot.
The attack in question is believed to have taken place with a newly developed ballistic robot that struck in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. The robot is said to have nuclear weapons capability and a slightly shorter range than a traditional intercontinental robot.
The launch of the new robot has been judged to be an escalation of the fighting. Russia also recently adopted a new nuclear doctrine where the threshold for using nuclear weapons has been lowered.
