RECAP: The 2020 US election
The 2020 US election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
Democrat Joe Biden beat out Republican Donald Trump to become the 46th President of the United States.
The most divisive election in History
The election took place against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic and COVID-19 recession. It was the first election since 1992, and the fifth in the past century, in which the incumbent president failed to win a second term.
The election saw the highest voter turnout by percentage since 1900.
Before, during, and after Election Day, Trump and numerous Republicans attempted to subvert the election and overturn the results, falsely alleging widespread voter fraud and trying to influence the vote-counting process in swing states.
This culminated in a mob of Trump supporters attacking the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, and Trump being impeached for incitement of insurrection.
Donald Trump becomes president again
After four years in office, Joe Biden and the Democrats are out and Donald Trump has been re-elected.
Biden’s time as president has been widely viewed as a failure by many Americans. Towards the end of his time in office, questions arose about Joe Biden’s mental fitness with several of his TV appearances being widely panned and mocked – he stumbled over his words and lost his train of thought repeatedly. Many gaffes led to concern from the American people and Biden agreed to step down as polling suggested Trump was set to return to office.
Kamala Harris became the official Democratic nominee but lost all the swing states and the popular vote to Trump. Biden blames the Democrats for forcing him out of office believing he could have beat Trump, whilst Harris’s team blame Biden for not stepping down soon enough.
