Queen’s death: What’s happening today?
The devastating news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday means all eyes will now be on Buckingham Palace.
Today, King Charles III will travel from Balmoral in Scotland to London with his wife Camilla, who will now be known as Queen Consort.
There are expected to be more details released throughout the day. But here’s what we know so far.
- King Charles will hold an audience with PM Liz truss at Buckingham Palace
- Parliament will gather at noon for MPs to pay respect to the Queen
- Midday bells will toll in tribute to the Queen, at Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral and Windsor Castle
- At 1 pm gun salutes will be fired in Hyde Park and elsewhere
- The PM and other senior ministers will attend a remembrance service at St Paul’s Cathedral
- The government will confirm a period of national mourning
- The King is likely to make his first television address to the nation as head of state
It’s not yet known when we will start to get details of the funeral – a full state funeral or when the Queen’s body will be bought back to London.
Her funeral is expected to take place in around 10 days’ time.
