Probe into Trump Organization now a criminal inquiry
New York’s investigation into the Trump Organization has widened to include a look at potential criminal wrongdoing, according to the New York state attorney general’s office.
The office was already investigating the former president’s company in a civil matter with New York Attorney General Letitia James focusing on whether the company improperly valued its assets for loan and tax reasons.
But now the state’s investigation has entered “a criminal capacity,” a spokesman told NPR late on Tuesday.
KEY POINTS:
- Trump Organization probe now a criminal inquiry
- Unclear if Donald Trump is part of the criminal investigation
- Former President may fave two criminal cases
- Wide-ranging fraud probe already underway
- Trump and Trump Organization deny wrongdoing.
“We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature,” Fabien Levy said in a statement.
“We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA.”
He added that more details couldn’t be shared at this time. It’s not clear whether the former president himself or members of his family were part of this criminal investigation. It’s also unclear when the Trump Organization was notified of the widening probe.
The expansion of the probe into the company means Donald Trump could face two criminal cases from separate prosecutors.
A wide-ranging fraud probe is already underway by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
Trump and the Trump Organization have denied wrongdoing and have blamed political motivation for the reason into the probe.
