PM in crisis: Suella Braverman quits and voting chaos
Liz Truss has faced yet another day of chaos in Parliament and her chances of remaining in No 10 seem even more unlikely.
Yesterday the prime minister lost another Cabinet member after the home secretary Suella Braverman resigned and chaotic scenes during a fracking vote in the Commons, with accusations of manhandling of MPs.
Liz Truss survived PMQs earlier on Wednesday only to have everything unravel shortly after.
Braverman quit after she accidentally emailed a government document from her personal email account. But many have questioned why she resigned for the mistake – as it’s not serious enough to warrant a resignation.
In her resignation letter, she slammed the government for breaking “key pledges” and failing to reduce immigration numbers. She expressed she had concerns over the ‘direction of this government.’
Later in the evening, a situation broke out in the Commons during a vote on fracking.
Opposition MPs alleged some Tories were bullied and manhandled into voting with the government on fracking.
The claim has been denied but many Tory MPs ended the day feeling angry and let down by the party.
There was also confusion over whether the vote was a confidence vote.
There were further reports that the Tory chief whip and deputy whip had both quit immediately after the voting took place. Many in the media and government were unsure of what was happening.
By 1:30 am it was confirmed to have been a confidence vote.
