PlayStation boss Jim Ryan given PS5 that looks like a PS1 as leaving present

Sony staff have been eating biscuits with pictures of Jim Ryan’s head on them, during a party to commemorate his exit from the company.

As we start to look back at the year in gaming it’s hard to pretend that it’s been a good one for PlayStation. Spider-Man 2 went deservedly well but beyond that Sony has had virtually no other major releases or announcements and their vaguely explained plans to focus on live service games seem to be in disarray.

There’s still no sign of The Last Of Us multiplayer game and recent reports about low morale at Bungie suggests they’re not going to be much help with Sony’s games as a service ambitions.

And then amidst all that there is the exit of PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, and the question of whether he walked away or was pushed. We may never find out for certain, but we do know that his leaving present would fetch a fortune on eBay.

The idea is that it’s a PlayStation 5 that looks like an old school PS1, although all that really means in practice is painting it a different colour and putting the old logos on it and the controller.

It’s nice though and would probably be very popular as a limited edition, but there’s no suggestion that it will ever become something you can buy in shops.

Sad I won’t be around for #TheGameAwards but I couldn’t pass up the chance to go to Jim Ryan’s thank you party and be around some legends and this one of a kind “Jim Ryan” PS5 with PS1 style. pic.twitter.com/WP7qwtxDI0

Ryan won’t actually leave his role until the end of Sony’s current financial year in March and the party in question was held in Japan, rather than being his main leaving do.

It was attended by various Sony luminaries, including PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi, and offered biscuits with pictures of Ryan’s head on them as snacks.

Ryan has been at PlayStation for almost 30 years, since before the launch of the first console, but his stated reason for leaving is that being the head of the whole business has put too much pressure on him working in the US and living in the UK.

There’s been no indication of who might take over from him, and whether there’ll be someone already familiar to gamers or an entirely new hire.
