Genesis star Mike Rutherford has revealed his bandmate Phil Collins is more immobile than he used to be, amid ongoing health struggles.

The 72-year-old suffered a spinal injury in 2007, and has struggled to perform in recent years, appearing on stage in a wheelchair for his his last ever Genesis show in March 2022.

Months earlier, he had spoken about his physical health, revealing he was ‘barely able’ to hold a drumstick in one of his hands.

Talking about the tour, Genesis guitarist Mike appeared on BBC Breakfast and shared: ‘Phil is much more immobile than he used to be, which is a shame but at the tour he was in good spirits and he’s fine now at home, enjoying life.

‘He’s worked so hard over the years, I think he’s enjoying his time at home.’

Phil was recruited to join Genesis as the band’s new drummer in the 1970s, eventually announcing his departure from the group in 1996.

The band have reunited on several occasions over the years, coming back together for their Last Domino? tour, which had to be postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Phil had previously confirmed that it would likely be his last tour as he continues to battle health issues.

When asked about more dates in 2022, he responded to Mojo (via NME): ‘This English and American tour, that will be enough for me.’

Phil’s son, Nic Collins, took over playing the drums for his father on the tour.

Talking about Nic stepping in, Mike continued: ‘He’s joining us, our regular Gary can’t make this one so Nic is going to step in and he’s a fantastic drummer.’

When asked if Phil would be proud seeing his son on stage with his bandmates, Mike added: ‘I think so, on stage at the last tour it was really nice to have the two of them side by side.’

Phil has previously spoken about his son taking over as drummer on the tours, saying: ‘I’m kind of physically challenged a bit, which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son.’

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One.
